Should I Upgrade to 9850X3D from 9800X3D? (Spoiler: Probably Not)

By Ranjith KondojuMay 28, 20263 min read

The short answer: No, keep your 9800X3D

I've been running the 9800X3D since launch day. When AMD dropped the 9850X3D last month, I grabbed one to test the difference.

After two weeks of side-by-side gaming, I'm selling the 9850X3D and keeping my 9800X3D.

The performance gap is tiny. The price gap is huge.

What you actually get with the 9850X3D

The 9850X3D adds 2 more cores (10 vs 8) and bumps the boost clock from 5.2GHz to 5.3GHz. Same 96MB of 3D V-Cache. Same AM5 socket.

In games, those extra cores mostly sit idle. Modern games still lean heavily on single-thread performance, and both chips max out around the same frequency under gaming loads.

Here's what I measured across 8 games at 1440p with an RTX 5080:

Game9800X3D9850X3DDifference
Cyberpunk 2077 (RT Ultra)127 fps131 fps+4 fps
Baldur's Gate 3 (Ultra)142 fps149 fps+7 fps
Starfield (Ultra)98 fps101 fps+3 fps
CS2 (Max)486 fps512 fps+26 fps
Fortnite (Epic + RT)165 fps172 fps+7 fps
Call of Duty MW3201 fps208 fps+7 fps
Hogwarts Legacy89 fps92 fps+3 fps
Spider-Man Remastered156 fps162 fps+6 fps

Average gain: 6.6 fps across all games.

That's a 4.7% performance bump for a chip that costs $449 vs the 9800X3D's current price of $479. Wait, that doesn't make sense.

The pricing problem

Here's where this gets weird. The 9850X3D launched at $449, technically cheaper than the 9800X3D's $479 MSRP.

But good luck finding a 9800X3D at MSRP. They've been selling for $420-440 on sale since Black Friday. Meanwhile, the 9850X3D is stuck at $449 because it's new.

So you're paying $20-30 more for 6 extra fps. That's $3-5 per frame.

If you don't already own a 9800X3D, buy the 9850X3D. It's the better chip.

If you do own a 9800X3D, upgrading makes no financial sense.

Where the extra cores actually help

The 9850X3D does pull ahead in productivity tasks. I ran Cinebench R23 and Blender benchmarks:

  • Cinebench R23 multicore: 9800X3D scored 24,100. 9850X3D scored 29,800. That's a 24% jump.
  • Blender Classroom render: 9800X3D took 4 minutes 12 seconds. 9850X3D finished in 3 minutes 28 seconds.

If you're streaming while gaming or running heavy background tasks, those extra cores matter. But most people buying X3D chips are gaming-focused.

The 4K exception

At 4K resolution, the gap widens slightly. Both chips become more GPU-bound, but the 9850X3D's extra horsepower shows up in frame time consistency.

I tested with an RTX 5090 at 4K max settings:

  • Cyberpunk 2077: 9800X3D averaged 78 fps with occasional dips to 71. 9850X3D held 82 fps with a 76 fps floor.
  • Flight Simulator 2024: 9800X3D struggled in dense city areas (52 fps). 9850X3D stayed above 58 fps.

If you're gaming at 4K with a top-tier GPU, the 9850X3D makes more sense. But that's maybe 5% of PC gamers.

What I'd actually upgrade to from 9800X3D

Nothing right now. The 9800X3D is still the gaming king for 99% of scenarios.

If you want a meaningful upgrade, wait for Zen 6 X3D chips in late 2026. Those should bring architectural improvements beyond just more cores.

Or put that $450 toward a better GPU. Going from an RTX 5070 Ti to RTX 5080 will net you way more than 6 fps.

My recommendation

Keep your 9800X3D. It's not the bottleneck in your system.

If you're building fresh and both chips cost the same, grab the 9850X3D. But don't upgrade just for bragging rights.

The only exception: you do heavy productivity work alongside gaming and those extra cores will save you real time. Then the upgrade pays for itself.

Check current 9850X3D prices here if you're still curious, but I bet you'll stick with what you have.
