# How to Build a Ryzen 7 9800X3D PC — Step by Step (90 Minutes)
Most first-time PC builds take 4 hours and 3 wrong moves. This guide takes 90 minutes the first time you do it.
I've built 47 PCs in the last 18 months. This is the exact order I use every time.
Parts assumed: the $1,828 9800X3D build. If you have different parts, the order still works.
Before you start (10 min)
- ●Clear a flat workspace, 4 ft × 2 ft minimum
- ●Anti-static wristband (optional but cheap insurance)
- ●Phillips #2 screwdriver — magnetic if possible
- ●USB drive with Windows 11 installer pre-flashed
- ●Strong overhead light
Do NOT start with the case. Always start outside it.
Step 1: Mount the 9800X3D on the motherboard (5 min)
- Set the motherboard on its cardboard box (clean, static-free).
- Lift the AM5 socket lever.
- Open the metal cover. Note the orientation triangle — match it to the triangle on the CPU.
- Drop the CPU in. Do not push. It seats by gravity.
- Close the cover. Lower the lever — it WILL resist (this is normal AM5 force).
- Apply a pea-sized blob of thermal paste to the IHS center.
If the lever fights you more than expected, lift it and re-check alignment. Do not force.
Step 2: Install the RAM (2 min)
- Unlock both clips on RAM slots A2 and B2 (the 2nd and 4th slots from the CPU).
- Match notch orientation, press firmly until both clips snap.
- Listen for the snap. If no snap, you're not seated.
DDR5 takes more force than DDR4. Lean on it.
Step 3: Install the M.2 SSD (3 min)
- Find the M.2 slot closest to the CPU (Gen 4/5).
- Remove the heatsink screws, lift the heatsink.
- Insert SSD at a 30° angle, lower it flat, screw it down.
- Replace the heatsink (remove the thermal pad's plastic film first!).
Step 4: Install the CPU cooler (10 min)
For the Thermalright Peerless Assassin:
- Install the AM5 mounting brackets (kit included).
- Mount the cold plate to the brackets. Hand-tight + 1/4 turn.
- Slide one fan onto the heatsink.
- Plug the fan cable into the CPU_FAN header on the motherboard.
Do NOT install the 2nd fan yet — it interferes with case mounting on some cases.
Step 5: Mount everything into the case (15 min)
- Install motherboard standoffs in the case if not pre-installed.
- Install I/O shield (snaps in from inside).
- Lower the motherboard onto standoffs. Align rear ports with I/O shield.
- Screw the motherboard down. 9 screws, snug not torqued.
Step 6: Pre-route PSU cables (10 min — critical step)
This is where most builds add 2 hours of frustration. Do it now, not later.
- Plug all cables into the PSU before mounting it.
- Run them through the back of the case via the cable management cutouts.
- Identify which cables you need:
- ●24-pin ATX → motherboard top right
- ●8-pin CPU EPS → motherboard top left
- ●16-pin (12VHPWR) for GPU → bottom front
- ●2× SATA power (just in case) → bottom rear
- Plug 24-pin, 8-pin CPU, and front-panel headers in NOW.
Step 7: Install the GPU (5 min)
Always last.
- Remove the rear PCIe slot covers (top 2).
- Hold the RTX 5070 Ti by the backplate edges.
- Align the PCIe gold fingers, lower it into the top PCIe x16 slot.
- Press firmly until you hear the latch click.
- Screw the bracket to the case.
- Plug in the 12VHPWR cable — all the way until it clicks. This is the #1 RMA cause.
Step 8: First boot (10 min)
- Plug in keyboard, mouse, monitor (to GPU not motherboard).
- Plug in power, flip PSU switch.
- Press the case power button.
- Watch for board POST LEDs. If CPU LED stays solid → re-check CPU/RAM seating.
- Hit DEL or F2 at boot to enter BIOS.
- Enable EXPO profile for your RAM (this is the #1 missed step — your RAM runs at half speed without it).
- Save, exit, reboot.
Step 9: Install Windows (15 min)
- Boot from your USB Windows 11 installer.
- During install, choose "Custom" → delete all partitions on the SSD → install.
- Skip the Microsoft account by disconnecting from Wi-Fi at the login screen.
- Set up an offline local account.
- Reconnect Wi-Fi after first login.
Step 10: Drivers + benchmarks (15 min)
- Install AMD Chipset drivers from amd.com.
- Install NVIDIA GeForce Game Ready driver from nvidia.com (skip GeForce Experience).
- Run Cinebench R23 — expect ~19,500 multi-core. If you get <16K, RAM EXPO isn't enabled.
- Run Furmark for 5 min on the GPU — verify no thermal throttling.
- Game.
Common First-Build Mistakes (Don't Do These)
- ●❌ Forgetting to enable EXPO/XMP — your RAM runs at half speed
- ●❌ Plugging the monitor into motherboard HDMI instead of GPU
- ●❌ Pushing GPU into the wrong PCIe slot (2nd slot is often x4 only)
- ●❌ Skipping the I/O shield install
- ●❌ Forcing the AM5 lever when CPU is misaligned
- ●❌ Mounting the PSU and THEN trying to route cables (the route-first rule)
FAQ
Q: Why does the AM5 lever feel so stiff?
A: AM5 uses LGA contacts on the socket (vs pins on AM4 CPU). The retention force is by design.
Q: My PC posts but no display — what's wrong?
A: 9 times out of 10, the monitor is plugged into motherboard HDMI, not the GPU.
Q: How do I know the 12VHPWR is fully seated?
A: You'll feel two clicks. If it only goes in halfway and looks angled, take it out and re-insert. Melted connectors come from partial seating.
Q: Do I need to update BIOS for the 9800X3D?
A: On B650 boards from 2024+, usually yes. Check your board manual. Use BIOS Flashback (USB port + button on rear I/O) if the board won't post.
Q: How long until I can game?
A: 90 minutes including Windows install if you've done it before. 3 hours first time.
